It’s all about the resume!
Create a personalized letter of introduction that outlines who you are and what you are passionate about.
List your experience & skills. If this is your first job, include a list of your accomplishments at school or volunteer work. Remember to be honest and positive and Include a list of references personal & professional.
Double check your spelling & ensure that your contact information is correct. Don’t make it difficult for a potential employer to get in touch with you.
Make a great first impression.
Remember that this is the first time that the manager/assistant manager is meeting you, so dress professionally. Even if you applying in a store that sells casual clothing, showing up in ripped jeans and flip flops isn’t appropriate. Show the staff that you take this opportunity seriously.
Rather than email or fax your resume, deliver it in person. Ask to speak to the manager or assistant manager and give it directly to them. Do not have your friend or relative drop off the resume for you.
Introduce yourself to the manager/assistant manager and reference the job opportunity. If your friends or family are helping you with your job search, ask them to wait outside while you drop of your resume. Remember that the store is hiring you, not your family or friends.
Wow them with your interview!
Go in with an upbeat positive attitude. Smile and remember to shake hands with whoever conducts the interview.
Listen to what the interviewer is saying and respond with more than one or two word answers. Show the manager that you are comfortable meeting and interacting with people you are not familiar with.
Research the store and the products they sell, this will help you not only understand what will be expected of you, but if you are asked what is your favorite thing about the store you will be prepared to answer.
Make eye contact with the interviewer and don’t fidget.
Don’t be afraid to ask relevant questions during the interview.
At the end of the interview, shake hands and thank the manager for the opportunity. Ask what the next steps are when you can call to follow up
